Sage root (Chinese) - Salvia miltiorrhiza (in the Lamiaceae or Mint family)

Part used: Root.

Taste/smell: Bitter.

Tendencies: Slightly cooling.

Dosage: Decoction: 2 teaspoons per cup of water; or 1:3 dry strength liquid extract: 10-60 drops 1-4 times per day.

Use: (a) Hypotensive, (b) Antimicrobial, (c) Antioxidant, (d) Kidney protectant, (e) Heart tonic, (f) Hepatoprotective.

Sage root is used for the treatment of angina and chronic glomerulonephritis. It protects the heart from ischemia induced derangements and assists in restoration of contractility after ischemia-incidents. Animal research has proven this herb to be useful at reducing all uremic indices when used in the early stages of kidney failure.
